Experience – training using role-play:


Medical Undergraduates: 1990 – present – communication skills training using the Calgary/Cambridge framework – Nottingham Medical School.

​

Palliative Care: 1996 – present - ‘Dying to Communicate’ –

multi-disciplinary communication skills training within oncology and palliative care.

​

Psychiatry: 1998 – present – psychiatric role-play across the UK and abroad, both within communication skills training and in OSCE settings, at under-graduateand post-graduate levels. Actor at the Royal College of Psychiatry CASC exams.

​

Multi-disciplinary training in the management of crisis and conflict. Psychotherapy training.


Oxford University :– international centre for excellence – psychiatry 2011


General Practice: advanced training – handling difficult scenarios. GP Selection process.


East Midlands Healthcare Deanery: 2008 – 2010 - intensive consultation skills training with doctors in difficulty.


Nottingham Vocational Training Scheme: ‘Using the consultation as a learning resource’.


Clinical Psychology: University of Leicester: communication skills training with psychology under-graduates.

Selection process for the PhD in Clinical Psychology. Initiation of the use of actors in the training of clinical psychologists.


Telephone Consultations: for out of hours surgeries and emergency services, using the King’s College teaching model.


Work Focussed Health Related Assessment (WFHRA):Professional Role Players are used to allow HCPs to practice different questioning styles and methods of communication using role play. The WFHRA involves discussion only.

workshops for St Barnabas Hospice  Lincoln and Hayward House Hospice Nottingham City Hospital that  encourage participants to reflect on the importance of good communication in the support of patients and their families when having those challenging conversations around Palliative Care and End of Life and being able to practice those skills in a safe environment with knowledgeable actors and learn to identify stressors prevalent at work to facilitate and broaden coping strategies.
